Abstract Objective: To evaluate the relationship between epileptic focus identified by magnetic source imaging(MSI) and hypertensive signal on fluid attenuated inversion recovery(FLAIR), so as to provide the basis for epilepsy surgery. Methods: MRI and MSI examination were performed in 20 patients with epilepsy and encephalomalacia. Compared the location of the epileptic focus determined by MSI with the location of the hypertensive signal on FLAIR. All 20 patients were operated on. Results: The location of the epileptic focus identified by MSI was all consistent with the location of the hypertensive signal on FLAIR in 12 cases; the epileptic focus identified by MSI was partially consistent with the hypertensive signal on FLAIR in 8 cases, 5 of the 8 patient’s extent of the epileptic focus defined by MSI were smaller than that of the hypertensive signal on FLAIR, the other three were larger than that of the hypertensive signal on FLAIR. Seizure free in 19 cases according to Engel classification of epilepsy. Conclusions: There are obvious correlation between the epileptic focus identified by MSI and the location of the hypertensive signal on FLAIR. The results of MSI might have many values to make the operative plan.
