Abstract Objective: To assess left ventricular longitudinal, radial, circumferential strain and twist in rabbit models of left ventricular hypertensive hypertrophy and diastolic heart failure induced by abdominal aortic constriction using two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography(STE). Methods: Thirty-four male New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: sham-operation group(control group, n=10), diastolic heart failure group(DHF group, n=12) and left ventricular hypertrophy group(LVH group, n=12). LVH and DHF were induced by suprarenal abdominal aortic constriction. After rabbit models were established, left ventricular strain and twist parameters were measured by STE. And left ventricular catheterization was performed. Results: Compared with sham-operation group, in LVH group, only longitudinal strain decrease significantly, in DHF group, longitudinal and radial strain both decreased significantly. Ptw increased significantly in LVH group, but increased nonsignificantly in DHF group. Conclusions: STE is useful in evaluating left ventricular performance in pressure-overload rabbit.
