Abstract  Objective: The significance of the diagnosis of total abnormal pulmonary venous connection(TAPVC) by echocardiography is investigated. Methods: The echocardiography data of TAPVC were analyzed, Philips IE33 and ATL 3000 Ultrasonic diagnostic systems were used. Results: The characteristic changes were observed in all the cases where the right atria and right ventricles were enlarged, and the left atria(LA) were smaller than normal, there was not any entrance of pulmonary veins detected on the wall of left atria, and the common pulmonary veins were seen in the upper left of the LA. In all cases atrial septal defects(in 10 cases) and/or patent foramen ovale(in 6 cases) existed. Among the 15 cases, there were 8 cases(53.3%) with the supracardiac connection, 6 with cardiac connection, and the other 2 cases(13.4%) were undetermined. There were 2 cases accompanied by pulmonary venous obstruction in the supracardiac cases. Conclusion: There were characteristic signs in the echocardiography in the patients with TAPVC. The accurate diagonosis can be made. Echocardiograpy is significant to determine the sites of drainage of pulmonary veins and pulmonary obstruction.
