Abstract Objective: To compare ultrasonographic data(ovarian volume and follicle number) of adolescent and adult patients with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS). Methods: 358 PCOS patients(85 adolescents and 273 adults) were involved in this study. They underwent transrectal or transviginal ultrasound during the early follicular phase(dominant follicle excluded by ultrasonography) with a Toshiba Sonolayer SSA-220A(Toshiba, Tokyo, Japan) real-time sonography fitted with a mechanical 6MHz probe. Ovarian volume was calculated using the simplified fomula: 0.5×length×width×thichness and follicle number of bilateral ovaries were counted, t test was used for statistical analysis. Results: Compare adolescent PCOS group with adult PCOS group, the mean ovarian volume(MOV) and maximal ovarian volume(MaxOV) and mean follicle number(MFN) were (9.33±3.87)cm3 versus (10.00±4.97)cm3, P=0.83; (11.04±4.82)cm3 versus (11.89±7.42)cm3, P=0.86; (12.93±2.90) versus (13.60±2.99), P=0.36 respectively. Conclusion: Ovarian volume and follicle number by ultrasonic inspection between adolescent and adult patients with PCOS showed no difference.
