Abstract:Objective: To study the clinical effect of bronchial arterial embolization in massive hemoptysis. Methods: Medical therapy was unsuccessful in 32 patients(19 men, 13 women) with massive hemoptysis(>300ml of blood in 24 hours). The main etiologies of hemoptysis were bronchiectasis(15 patients), tuberculosis(11 patients), pneumonitis(4 patients), lung cancer(2 patients). Selective bronchial arterial angiography and bronchial arterial embolization were performed. In selective bronchial arterial embolization gelfoam was used, in superselective bronchial arteries embolization, PVA was used. Results: Embolization was performed once in 28 patients, twice in 3 patients, emergency lobectomy was required for massive hemoptysis recured three days after twice embolization in 1 patient. Conclusion: Bronchial arterial embolization is an effective and safe treatment in patients with massive hemoptysis for medical therapy.
