Abstract Objective: To analyze the ultrasonic characteristic and its clinical application in the diagnosis of common complications including hematoma, false aneurysm and arteriovenous fistula following puncture of femoral artery. Methods: Forty-six cases with vascular murmur and/or a palpable mass in puncture site were observed by color Doppler ultrasonography. The echo characteristic and its flow state in the mass, the relation between the mass and the femoral artery were analyzed, the condition about the femoral artery and veins were also evaluated. Results: In the 46 cases, 21 cases were hematoma, no flow was found in the mass without clinical treatment; 16 cases were false aneurysm, the blood flow in the mass was coming from the femoral artery and the tear in femoral wall was found, 15 cases were pressed to close the aneurysm and 1 case was operated to repair the aneurysm; 9 cases were arteriovenous fistula, the fistula between the femoral artery and vein was detected, the shunt flow from the femoral artery to vein was detected during systole and diastole, 7 cases were pressed to close the fistula and 2 cases were operated to repair fistula. Conclusions: Color Doppler ultrasonography is a simple and accurate method for common complications following puncture of femoral artery, now it has been the preferred examination and offers an accurate information for clinical treatment.
