Abstract Objective: To explore the value of carotid pulse wave velocity(CPWV) in evaluating the arterial elastic function changes in diabetes patients. Methods: The carotid arteries of both 123 diabetes patients who were divided into hypertensive group(45 cases) and normotensive group(78 cases) and 50 subjects as normal control group were examined with TDI and M-mode ultrasound. The electro-mechanical time(EMT), pulse wave time(PWT), and the systolic and diastolic diameters were recorded. The CPWV, the stiffness index and compliance were calculated. Results: In comparison with the control group, there were longer CPWV in each diabetic group(P<0.001). CPWV correlated with age stiffness index and compliance. Conclusions: CPWV can be used to early reflect the arterial function changes in diabetes patients, and it may be used to evaluate the elastic function as a new index.
