Abstract To evaluate the diagnostic value of MRI in central diabetes insipidus(CDI) in children. Materials and Methods: MRI findings of 18 children with CDI were analyzed retrospectively. All 18 patients underwent the conventional and contrast enhanced MRI scanning of the pituitary gland, and were confirmed to be CDI by clinical diagnosis. Results: The absence of posterior pituitary hyperintensity showed by MRI in all 18 children with CDI. The lesions located in the hypothalamus-pituitary region in 15 patients. The posterior lobe of pituitary gland was not enhanced in 3 patients which merely have the absence of posterior pituitary hyperintensity. Conclusions: The conventional and contrast enhanced MRI scanning is valuable in the diagnosis and search for the etiology of CDI in children according to its features. The absence of posterior pituitary hyperintensity serves as a nonspecific indicator of CDI.
