Abstract Objective: To explore the clinical application of multislice spiral CT in evaluating the involvement of pterygopalatine fossa and its communications by fibrous dysplasia. Materials and Methods: The normal pterygopalatine fossa and its communication of 100 cases(200 sides) were studied, moreover pathological changes were observed in 23 cases(41 sides) of fibrous dysplasia by MSCT scanner, all volume data were subjected to multiplanar reformation(MPR), curved planar reformation(CPR) in working station, to review the morphologic characteristics of the normal pterygopalatine fossa and its communications, to measure and compare the pterygopalatine fossa, pterygoid canal, foramen rotundum between two sets respectively. Results: The pterygopalatine fossa and its communications mainly displayed narrow and deformed in cases of fibrous dysplasia, the imaging anatomic characteristic were clearly and directly demonstrated in MSCT scanning images, MPR and CPR images. Conclusion: MSCT may play important roles in appreciating the influence of fibrous dysplasia on pterygopalatine fossa and its communications.
