Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the value of T2-mapping imaging in the knee articular cartilage of the non-professional athletes after marathon. Methods: Cartilage thickness and MRI T2 values of 13 marathon runners(age range: 24~40 years, mean (32±6.3) years) were compared before and after the marathon. A 3.0T scanner was used to calculate thickness and T2 values of the weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing area of the femoral and tibial cartilage. Statistical difference was analyzed. Results: There was no significant difference of conventional magnetic resonance imaging before and after the marathon. MRI T2 values of superficial cartilage were higher than deeper layer both before and after the marathon. After marathon running MRI T2 values decreased in superficial cartilage of the weight-bearing area of the femoral and tibial along with a decrease of cartilage thickness. Conclusion: MRI T2-mapping imaging provides quantitative assessment of articular cartilage correlated with the biochemical changes in cartilage. MRI T2 value of superficial cartilage is higher than deeper layer. After marathon running MRI T2 values decrease in superficial cartilage from the weight-bearing area of the femoral and tibial along with a decrease of cartilage thickness.
