Abstract:Objective: To investigate the value of two-dimensional and color Doppler ultrasonography in the diagnosis and follow-up of subacute thyroiditis(SAT). Methods: Forty-seven patients were diagnosed as subacute thyroiditis by pathology, laboratory examination and clinical symptoms, then all the patients were checked with two-dimensional ultrasonography and color Doppler imaging. At the same time, they were also follow-up after related treatment. Results: Local or diffuse low echo area of thyroid gland appeared in all the subacute thyroiditis patients, with no regular and clear edge, and accompanying with pain at palpation. The blood stream signal in pathological region(diseased region) was abundant, with low blood flow inside the artery, The blood flow of the patients with local and diffuse echo area was obviously quick(P<0.01), when the pathological area was larger than 50% of the same side of the thyroid gland. However, when the pathological changes of local low echo area was smaller than 50% of the same side of the thyroid gland, the blood flow did not increase significantly compared to the normal thyroid gland(P>0.05). After being given related treatment, the ultrasonographic image of 40 patients returned to normal level and did not recur after withdrawal of treatment. The clinical symptom and objective sign in 7 patients became better, the illness recurred after withdrawal of treatment when symptom of subacute thyroiditis was disappeared from the ultrasonographic image. Conclusions: Two-dimensional and color Doppler ultrasonography has played an important role in the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis, meanwhile, it also showed a very key clinical value during the treatment process.
