Abstract:Objective: Variable success rates for identifying axillary sentinel lymph node(SLN) in breast cancer patients using preoperative lymphoscintigraphy have been reported. We evaluated whether tumor location, size, method of interval and age affect its success in identifying SLN. Method: Preoperative breast lymphoscintigraphy was performed in consecutive breast cancer patients. Imaging at 5 minuties and 2 hours after peritumoral injection of 99Tcm-phytate. Chi-Square test for statistics was used with SSPS 11.5 software. Results: SLN were obtained in 204(97.1%) at 5 minuties and?蛐or 2 hours of 210 patients. Success in identifying SLN was not affected by tumor location, size, method of interval; SLN were identified significantly more frequently in patients under 50 years old(59.4%) than those over 50 years old(44.7%)(χ2=4.03, P<0.05) at 5 minutes; 98.5% and 90.7%(χ2=4.49, P<0.05) at 2 hours. Conclusion: 99Tcm-phytate SLN scintigraphy is an easy technique with an acceptable success rate. No effect of tumor size, location, method of interval was found. Patient age affected its success in identifying SLN.
