Abstract:Objective: To observe neonatal insula development situation and clinical significance by head ultrasound. Methods: Morphological characteristics and areas and perimeters of 212 cases of neonatal insula(at 28~43 weeks’ corrected gestational age(CGA)) were observed and measured by head ultrasound and their correlation with CGA were evaluated with regression analysis. The repeatability and consistency were analyzed with ICC and Bland-Altman analysis. Results: Neonatal insula was inverted triangle in shape, insula gyrus were radially extended upwards, which looked like flower petal. The area and perimeter of neonatal insula strongly correlated with CGA. The regression equations were as follows: area of insula(mm2)=183.7CGA-2 766.1(r2=0.545, P<0.01), perimeter of insula(mm)=12.91CGA-243.66(r2=0.393, P<0.01). The repeatability and consistency of data obtained were all perfect. Conclusion: Transcranial ultrasound can become a routine means in assessing the development of neonatal insula.
