Abstract Objective: To evaluate RV systolic function in patients with atrial septal defect(ASD) using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography(RT-3DE). Methods: Eighteen patients with ASD and twenty-two normal persons were studied by acquiring full volume images on RT-3DE, then were analysed by software(4D RV-Function 1.1). End-diastolic volume(EDV), end-systolic volume(ESV), ejection fraction(EF) of the global right ventricle and the regional volume and EF of the segments were acquired. Results: EDV and ESV of global and regional right ventricle increased in ASD patients, global and regional right ventricle EF were decreased in ASD patients(P<0.05). Meanwhile the systolic tendency of right ventricle in ASD patients was differed from the normal persons. Conclusion: The RT-3DE is a precise technology not only in evaluation of global and regional right ventricular systolic function but also in discrimination of segmental function simultaneously.
