Abstract Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of phase contrast(PC) MR in measuring the blood flow of aorta. Method: Eleven cases of blood flow in the beginning of aorta of the healthy volunteers were measured by using PC MR, and the stroke volume which was derived from the change of left ventricle within each cardiac cycle were measured by short axis cine MRI. The values of stroke volume by the two methods were analysed and compared. We compared the time that cost in scanning and post-processing of the two methods. Results: There were good consistency between net blood flow volume of aorta measured by using PC MR with that of left ventricle by short axis cine MRI(r=0.92). It took less time to scan and post-process imaging by using PC MR than short axis cine MRI. There was less inter-observer and intra-observer influence by using PC MR. Conclusion: PC MR is a noninvasive, safe, accurate method. It is a good way in research the blood flow dynamics of aorta by using PC MR, and can assess left ventricular systolic function.
