Functional MRI study on mental abacus calculation
SUN Ji-ning;WANG Bin;LI Li-xin;ZHANG Bao-long;LONG Jin-feng
DOI:
Objective: To investigate the brain functional status and the activating mode in the trained children engaged in mental calculation with functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI). Methods: Twelve children trained with mental abacus calculation for 3 years performed mental calculation tasks including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and number-object control judging tasks. Using a block-design, 3 resting blocks and 3 stimulating blocks alternatively. Blood oxygenation level dependence(BOLD) fMRI scan was performed in a Siemens Trio 3.0T MRI scanner with an echo planar imaging(EPI) sequence. All data were analyzed by SPM2(statistical parametric mapping 2) to generate the brain activation map. Results: Bilateral occipital lobes(bilateral cuneus), the right parietal lobe(the right inferior parietal lobule, the right superior parietal lobule, the right precuneus, the right postcentral gyrus), and bilateral cerebellums were activated in the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculation. The right lingual gyrus was activated in addition and division calculation. The left lingual gyrus was activated in subtraction and multiplication. In addition, the left precuneus and the right fusiform were activated in multiplication calculation. Conclusion: The trained children activated mainly the occipital lobe and the parietal lobe, which manifested their calculation method may depend mostly on visuo-spatial strategy.

DOI:
Objective: To explicit the dynamic changes of average diffusion coefficient(DCav), Isotropic image(Iso), fractional anisotropy(FA), relative anisotropy(RA), anisotropy index(AI) value in acute cerebral ischemia. Materials and Methods: Twelve male SD rats were divided into four groups randomly: group A: cerebral ischemia 1h(3 rats), group B: cerebral ischemia 1.5h(3 rats), group C: cerebral ischemia 3h(3 rats), group D: cerebral ischemia 6h(3 rats). MRI in the prescriptive time and the cerebral TTC stain in 24h were performed. The values of Iso signal, DCav, FA, RA, and AI in the lesion and control region were measured. Results: The DCav value of left cortical and striatal area were lowered grading 51%~67% and the isotropic image showed hyperintensity significently in all times. After cerebral ischemia 1h and 1.5h, the FA and RA value in left hemisphere increased slightly, but had no significance with contralateral region. The AI image showed hypointensity in left hemisphere, the ratio of AI value between lesion and contralateral region were 0.50 and 0.46. In 3h and 6h, the FA and RA value of left hemisphere dropped. The AI values were lowered with the ratio of 0.18 and 0.06 between two sides. Conclusions: The MR DTI parameters changes were luxuriant in acute cerebral ischemia.

Correlative study between peritumoral edema on MRI and P53 protein in supratentorial astrocytic gliomas
ZHOU Dong-hai;HE Ning;HUANG Jin;ZHANG Jing;ZHAO Zhi-wen;LI Bing-cui;LI Gang;WEI Chun-ping
DOI:
Objective: To analyse the peritumoral edema of supratentorial astrocytic gliomas on MRI, to investigate the correlation between the MRI scores of peritumoral edema degree and P53 protein. To reveal the molecular biological foundation of MRI of peritumoral edema in supratentorial astrocytic gliomas. Methods: We analyzed MR features of 42 cases peritumoral edema in the supratentorial astrocytic gliomas verified by surgery and pathology, including 5 grade Ⅰ, 8 grade Ⅱ, 10 grade Ⅲ and 19 grade Ⅳ tumors. All the cases were divided into 4 groups according to the scores of peritumoral edema. Histopathological slides underwent P53 protein immunohistochemical staining. The expressions of P53 protein were analyzed and compared with their scores of peritumoral edema. The data were correlatively studied. Results: In 42 cases, the positive expression rate of P53 protein was 10% to 85% with an average of 48.35%±23.44%. The positive expression rate of P53 protein increased with the increasing of peritumoral edema scores(P<0.05). Conclusion: The peritumoral edema on MRI in supratentorial astrocytic gliomas can reflect the positive expression rate of P53 protein. MRI may prove to be a valuable means in estimating the expression of P53 protein in supratentorial astrocytic gliomas quickly and noninvasively, and further predicting the molecular biological behavior of supratentorial astrocytic gliomas and judging the prognosis.

YAN Xin-hui;XIE Jian;GAO Chuan-yu;WANG Zi-chao
DOI:
Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of bone marrow stem cells transplantation in patients with acute myocardial infarction(AMI) using the quantitative analysis of myocardial radionuclide imaging and holter. Methods: Thirty-six patients, who had AMI within 4 weeks, underwent percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI) after AMI with NYHA Ⅱ~Ⅲ class. The patients were divided into trial group[PCI+normal saline(NS)] and control group[PCI+autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells(BM-MNCs)] randomly. NS or BM-MNCs was infused into the infarct related artery through the guiding catheter after PCI in control group and trial group respectively. ECG, holter, SPECT were assessed before PCI, 45d, 90d after that. Result: ①SPECT scan: results showed perfusion defect decreased 34.32% and 23.05% than base-line at 45d in trial and control group respectively, the difference between the two methods was significant(P<0.05); and significant difference was also found in both groups. The perfusion decreased 14.77% and 3.82% at 90d compared with 45d in trial and control group respectively(P<0.05); but significant difference was not found in both groups, only in trial group. ②24h electrocardiographic monitoring demonstrated that there was no difference in the occurrence of ventriarrhythmia or bradycardia between before PCI, and 45d, 90d after that(P>0.05). Conclusions: The quantitative analysis of myocardial radionuclide imaging is a feasible approach to assess the efficacy and safety of bone marrow stem cells transplantation in patients with AMI. And bone marrow stem cells transplantation has some efficacy in patients with AMI and does not increase the incidence of malignant arrhythmias.

Survivin expression in bladder carcinoma and its relationship to the blood flow of CPA
JIN Rong;LI Yan-min;WANG Zhong;JIAO Tong
DOI:
Objective: To evaluate the relationship between the expression of Survivin gene protein and the blood flow of color power Doppler angio imaging(CPA) in bladder carcinoma. Methods: Fifty patients of bladder carcinoma and 20 cases of hyperplasia were examined preoperatively by CPA whereas Survivin gene protein was stained immunohistochemistry after operation. Results: The positive expression ratio of Survivin gene protein in 50 cases of bladder carcinoma(78%) was significant higher than that of the hyperplasia group(25%, P<0.05). The expression intensity of Survivin gene in the group of bladder carcinoma correlated positively to the degreens of their CPA(r=0.699, P<0.05). The resistance index(RI) value of malignant group(0.50±0.43) was slight lower than that of the hyperplasia group(0.69±0.41, P<0.05). In addition, the expression intensity of Survivin gene in the group of bladder carcinoma correlated negatively to their RI values(r=-0.545, P<0.05). Conclusion: The high expression of Survivin gene was widely observed in bladder carcinoma, and its expression intensity correlated positively to the RI values. The combination of Survivin gene and CPA can help us to assess the bladder carcinoma before and after operation. Furthermore, it may provide important information for earlier clinical diagnosis and judgment of prognosis.

Study on image characteristics and regularity of isolated single atrium in color Doppler echocardiography
HOU Chuan-ju;DENG Dong-an;ZHU Xian-yang;HAN Xiu-min;YANG Jun;LI Chun-hua
DOI:
Objective: To investigate the imaging character and regularity of isolated single atrium(ISA) in color Doppler echocardiography(CDE). Methods: Thirty patients of ISA were examined with CDE. Fourteen cases of them underwent angiocardiography for correlation. All of the cases were confirmed by operation. Results: Twenty-seven cases were accurately diagnosed by CDE image with the diagnostic accuracy rate of 90.0%. The other 3 cases were misdiagnosed as partial atrioventricular septal defect. The features of CDE image in ISA had obvious characteristics: ①The parasternal long-axis view of left ventricle by 2DE showed an enlarged right ventricle and elongation and narrowing of the left ventricle outflow tract. The apical four-chamber view showed echo dropout in the interatrial septum, closure of the mitral and tricuspid valve during systole and the substitution of normal “cross” image by a “upside-down T” sign. Parasternal short axis view at the mitral valve level in 2DE showed a “broken bridge”-like anterior mitral leaflet. ②M-mode ECG showed equidirectional movement of the interventricular septum and the posterior left ventricular wall, narrowing of the outflow tract of left ventricule and a double-curve echo of the anterior leaflet of mitral valve. ③Continuous-wave Doppler assessments of pulmonary artery pressure were more than 30mmHg in all the cases. ④Color Doppler flow imaging showed colorful regurgitation flow through the mitral valve and the tricuspid valve during systole and through the pulmonary valve during diastole. Conclusions: The feature of CDE image in ISA is obvious and is valuable in diagnosis for ISA, but it should be differentiated from partial atrioventricular septal defect.

HU Liang-bo;DU Ying;YANG Quan;LIU An-quan;ZHANG Ao;ZHANG Dong
DOI:
Objective: To study the CT and MRI features of solid-pseudopapillary tumors of the pancreas(SPTP). Methods: Imaging findings of 13 patients with histopathologically proven SPTP were analyzed retrospectively. CT was performed in 12 patients and MRI in 4 patients. Results: Eleven masses were located in the marginal zone of the pancreas. The SPTP were round or elliptial, while the tumors involving both cystic portions and solid portions. All tumors have clear margins. On CT scans, the tumors were low density. Seven masses showed calcification. All masses were mixed hypo- and hyperintense on T1WI and T2WI in 4 cases, and solid portions of mass showed slightly hypointense on T1WI, and iso- or slightly hyperintense on T2WI; and cystic portions of mass showed hypointense on T1WI, and hyperintense on T2WI. On enhanced CT and MRI scans, solid portions showed marked enhancement and cystic portions showed no enhancement. The most marked density contrast between lesions and normal tissue showed on arterial phase, and the contrast of the lesions were equal to the normal tissue on portal vein and balancing phase. Conclusion: There are some characteristics on CT and MRI manifestation of SPTP. The correct imging diagnosis and differential diagnosis is possible based on clinical characteristic and CT or MRI findings.
