Abstract Objective: To investigate functional connectivity strength(FCS) changes underlying depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia(SZ) and to analyze correlation depressive symptoms with FCS. Methods: Ninety-one SZ patients and 89 healthy controls(HC) were recruited to undergo a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. The positive and negative symptom scale(PANSS) general psychopathology scale item 6(G6) was used to assess the severity of depressive symptoms in SZ. Patients were defined as depressed with scores of PANSS-G6>1, otherwise they were categorized into the non-depressed group(NDSZ). The correlation between FCS and depression severity was tested using multiple regression analysis in SZ. The FCS maps correlated with the depression symptoms were compared with one-way ANOVA among the three groups. Results: Depressive scores were strongly correlated with FCS values in the bilateral superior temporal gyrus(STG) in SZ patients. The FCS values in the bilateral STG were significantly increased in DSZ compared to NDSZ and HC. Conclusion: Schizophrenia patients with depressive symptoms have stronger FCS in the bilateral STG, which may be a possible neural mechanism of the depressive symptoms in these patients.
